Dichotomy of Control

Right now I’m stressed, frustrated, sad, and self-doubtful— all at the same time. I literally just want to cry XD

While feeling this heaviness, I stumbled upon my note that I wrote last year on Google Notes. It says, “dichotomy of control”, I forgot what it means, so I looked it up and found out that it’s the basic principle of Stoicism.

“Some things are within our power, while others are not. Within our power are opinion, motivation, desire, aversion, and, in a word, whatever is of our own doing; not within our power are our body, our property, reputation, office, and, in a word, whatever is not of our own doing.”Epictetus

There’s a lot of things in life that are out of our control — other people’s opinions, external events, and outcomes. It’s something we have nothing to do with. Trying to change that gives us frustration and worry.

Sh*t happens. However, we always have the ability to decide on how to react to it. Shake it off.
